Description

Sd.Kfz. 251

The Sd.Kfz. 251 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251) half-track was an armored fighting vehicle designed and first built by the Hanomag company during World War II, and based on their earlier, unarmored Sd.Kfz. 11 vehicle. The larger of the pair (the Sd.Kfz. 250 being the lighter one, designed and built by Demag) of the fully armored wartime half-tracks of the Wehrmacht, the Sd.Kfz. 251 was designed to transport the panzergrenadiers of the German mechanized infantry corps into battle. Sd.Kfz. 251s were the most widely produced German half-tracks of the war, with at least 15,252 vehicles and variants produced by various manufacturers, and were commonly referred to simply as “Hanomags” by both German and Allied soldiers.

    Overall:
Detail and quality is impressive. I am happy to have found Pico Armor. The sculpting is incredible and artistic in its detail; has an organic feel compared to 3D printed 3mm pieces I’ve seen out there.

    The Material:
Seems to be a metal alloy, heavier than aluminum, but with a convenient brittleness. The sprues snapped off easily with my fingernails, and the micro-sized flash was easily removed with fine nail clippers. There are some molding lines (visible in the product photos) that I haven’t figured out how to remove yet with a file, but it’s acceptable at this scale.

    Painting:
The minis hold paint beautifully. I sprayed two thin coats of Tamiya’s light gray “Fine” primer spray, which preserved all of the details. Using multiple layers of dry brushing and very thin acrylics and washes I was amazed with how much detail can be highlighted and preserved.

They look great close up and from far away.

    Pros:
Artistic and organic level of detail
High quality miniatures and generously affordable
Customer service was top notch with a personal email from Pico Armor after my purchase
The shock value from friends and family who’ve never seen 3mm minis before

    Cons:
My only real complaint is that 3mm wargaming isn’t more popular!

I’m quite impress with the detail of these castings. These are perfect for large scale (Division and Corps) level historical gaming. I’m priming them now and will hopefully post pictures soon on Pico’s Facebook site. I’m a fan

Great metal figures, sharp detail and durable. Easy to paint.
